Do you have a cabin or camp by the lake somewhere or that special spot where you spent your summers and learned how to fish? These places are a nostalgic part of our past. The only problem is they need restoration!
Many of these structures were built either on the ground or propped up on a rock close to the ground. The problem with this is now you will find on close examination that the first rows of logs may soft or structurally damaged. Also the first floor framing could be compromised as well. The roofing ,windows, doors, and chimneys are also places where upgrades may be needed and this is only the exterior. On the interior there could be changes to modernize the layout of the floor plan, upgrades to plumbing, heating, and electric systems.
The good news is that anything that was built can be rebuilt to a modern, efficient structure without sacrificing the charm and patina of the original. First you would want to jack up and straighten the base, adding footings to keep logs up off the ground, make any repairs needed to logs and floor system. Next would be the roof. Make any repairs to roof decking and add shingled or metal roof systems at this time. That is the hardest part, many industrious homeowners could take it from there finishing upgrades such as windows, doors, or interior upgrades or we can take it all the way. You may also consider corn cob blasting, re-caulking, re-staining to bring the logs back to life.
